Without Faith, it is Impossible to Please God
Today’s devotional time came from the Westminster Confession of Faith (WCF), which I have been studying since September 2020. I love it. If you’ve never heard of it, it’s a book of statements about the Christian Faith supported by thousands of scriptures. I love it because it drives so deep and covers so much ground. It puts concretely into words, the major tenant of our faith. In order to understand it, you must read it slowly, repeatedly, and read all accompanying scriptures. It was a hard one to hear today, though I know it to be true by many supporting scriptures. You can read WCF Chapter 16.7, if you want.
The scripture I selected to meditate upon is, But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that HE IS, and that HE IS a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.- Hebrews 11:6. We are reminded that only those things done in faith toward God will please God. We may have many good intentions, done with sincerity of heart, but that’s not
enough. It is important to do things with not just sincerity of heart, but in ways that are consistent with the Word of God and for the glory of God. Sometimes we get caught up in the thing we’re doing. Verses like this, make us re-examine our motives and re-evaluate our actions.
We believe that HE IS the Great I AM and that HE IS a rewarder of those that diligently seek Him (to seek to know Him intimately, to know His Word, to obey Him, and to seek to please Him). Only a heart that’s been transformed by His love and grace can do that. In this flesh, it is impossible to please God; it has always been about us and will always be about us. But for those that believe, we are reminded that, faith cometh by hearing, and hearing of the Word of God (Roman 10:17).
Let us daily abide in the Word of God; to read it, study it, meditate upon it, and apply it. May there be an ongoing desire to know our Father and Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, even more intimately. May we love to hear His voice and the joys of living in His grace. May our faith transform the way we steward our finances and all the important areas of our lives. May we lovingly hold each other accountable to walk in ways consistent with the faith that we proclaim.
