Get Your HOUSE In Order & Your House In Order
“In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came unto him, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Set thine house in order: for thou shalt die, and not live.” (Isaiah 38:1). Another translation says, “…Set your house in order and prepare a Will, for you shall die; you will not live” (Isaiah 38:1b AMP).
We know from scripture that a person’s eternal estate is most important. Jesus said, Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness…” (Matthew 6:33a). It is absolutely absurd to say the bible talks more about money than salvation; but people say it. The one thread that runs from Genesis to Revelations is the redemption of our souls through the only begotten son of God. It has nothing to do with money; nor is money an indication of God’s favor on your life. For there are many wealthy people in spiritual torment; and poor people, with spiritual peace contentment.
So, above all else, we must ensure it is well with our soul or else endeavor to do so. It is not promised that we will be granted another fifteen years as The Lord granted Hezekiah. If we have fifteen years, we can’t assume it. If we don’t, we can’t change it. Either way, we redeem the day. Now is the day of salvation (2 Cor 6:2). Today, is the day to seek God’s face. And when we have done this for ourselves, let’s endeavor to do the same for our loved ones. Let that be the most important legacy we leave behind;
love enough to share the Truth. May it be well with your soul.
At the same time, we learn from scripture that estate planning is also important. Scripture says, “A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children…”Proverbs 13a. You may have heard people say things like, “I had to work to get mine, so they’ll have to work to get theirs,” or, “Well it won’t matter because I’ll be gone.” How utterly heartbreaking to leave a legacy of debt and selfishness.
While, I’m not certain, I agree with the Amplified Bible’s interpretation of “Set your house in order and prepare a Will,” I do believe preparing a Will is important, in addition to a few other things. A Will tells the state what you want to happen with your children and possessions. Most black and brown people don’t know all their assets become part of an estate once they die; and something has to happen with that estate. Without a Will, our families could be bound up in probate court for years, after our death. Additionally, most black and brown people do not have private life insurance. That mean, there’s a chance when we die, our families will have the financial burden to pay for our final costs from their own money or be forced to beg from family and friends. Prayerfully, that’s not the legacy we want to leave. We all need life insurance. Plus, financially savvy people know life insurance creates an immediate estate and a Trust protects that life insurance so that the right things happens in the right time and in the right way. A Will does not do that. And certainly, our inaction won’t do that.
Let’s get our HOUSE (soul) in order and then get our house(hold) in order.
