Are Riches Evidence of God's Favor?

Some people think the abundance of riches is indicative of favor from Christ for their good works and/or great faith; and the lack of riches as evidence of displeasure from God for bad works and/or lack of faith. Others think forsaking riches and possessions equates to pious living; setting service to Christ over material gain. Both use scripture to defend their belief system.

We cannot deny that scripture speaks on the issue of money, riches, wealth, greed, selfishness, generosity, stewardship, etc. The reality is, there are scriptural truths that are practical for every day living and benefit us when applied- whether we profess to be saved or not. For example, when we read, “the borrower is servant to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7b); and make effort to avoid debt it is likely we wont’ find ourselves overwhelmed in credit card debt and the host of issues that come with it. This is just one example of the practicality of some scripture.

What we possess or don’t possess does not, however, speak to our riches in Christ. Our physical lives are not derived from the

possessions we have; just as the breath of Christ quickening our spirits to salvation, is not derived from our riches and possessions, our works, and/or great faith. Our salvation is by God’s grace (goodness) alone.

In Luke 12:15, we are urged to take heed, be watchful, and guard against covetousness (greed). That intense desire to get rich or have what somebody else has; is not Christ honoring and will certainly lead down the path of more dishonoring thoughts and actions. Even if we were to gain to our heart’s content, that will not satisfy the longing of our soul. And when we come to the end of our lives, the abundance of our possessions will not follow us, will not set us up, will not change our lot.

May we be found good stewards, appropri-ately apply scripture, guard against greed, and honor God in what we have. Chances are, there are areas in our finances and living, in which we can do better and should do better. May be make earnest efforts to do so. Not for the because of greed, but because right living reflects well upon our Father and assures our riches in Christ.

Then He said to them, And He said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness; for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of things which he possesseth. -Luke 12:15
